PSL Clubs Circle as Mabasa’s Pirates Future Remains Uncertain

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has become a subject of keen
interest for several PSL clubs, as his limited involvement at the Soweto
giants raises questions about his future.

The 29-year-old has seen minimal action this season, failing to make recent
matchday squads and last playing an official match in September. With his
current contract set to expire in June 2026 and no extension yet agreed,
Mabasa will be eligible to sign a pre-contract with a new club as early as
January 2025.

His situation is drawing particular attention as Pirates reshape their squad
following the departure of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Chicago Fire and
the anticipated arrival of forward Andre de Jong from Stellenbosch FC.

Interestingly, Stellenbosch—the club poised to lose de Jong—is said to be
among the sides monitoring Mabasa, viewing him as a potential replacement.
They are not alone, with other PSL teams also assessing the striker as they
look to bolster their attacking options.

While Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has previously cited tactical reasons
for sometimes omitting a traditional number nine, Mabasa’s prolonged absence
has frustrated fans and intensified speculation about his role at the club.

The striker market appears active elsewhere in the league, too. For
instance, Steve Barker’s side is reportedly evaluating the futures of
attackers Lehlohonolo Mojela and Lesiba Nku, which could prompt clubs to
seek proven alternatives like Mabasa.

With no contract extension finalized, sources confirm that Mabasa remains in
a state of limbo, and PSL rivals are watching closely, ready to potentially
pounce as the striker enters the final phase of his deal at Pirates.
