Kerr Reveals “Frustrating” Past with Bafana Newcomer Makgalwa, Hails His Turnaround

Former Moroka Swallows coach Dylan Kerr has expressed his delight at
Keletso Makgalwa’s recent Bafana Bafana call-up, while revealing that the
attacker was once the “most frustrating player” he coached due to his
attitude.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Kerr explained that during Makgalwa’s
loan spell at Swallows from Mamelodi Sundowns, the player’s mentality was a
major issue.

“I’m absolutely delighted for Keletso… because he was the most frustrating
player for me at Swallows,” Kerr told PSLSA. “His mentality, it was all
about him. He thought he was better because of his Sundowns stature. He
thought he had the right to play because he was on loan from Sundowns.”

Kerr revealed that he gave Makgalwa crucial advice after his release from
Swallows, encountering him at a stadium. “I said to him, ‘If you do things
right, if you become an unselfish player, you could become a very good
player’,” Kerr shared. “I said, ‘You gonna have regrets, never look back on
your career and have regrets… make it up now’.”

The former coach credited Makgalwa for heeding that advice, noting his
impressive performances since joining Sekhukhune United. “He has gone to
Sekhukhune, he has done well and he deserves the call-up,” Kerr stated.

Kerr suggested that the disciplined environment under Bafana coach Hugo
Broos, who is known for challenging entitlement, is the perfect setting to
further develop Makgalwa’s talent.

“If Hugo gets the better of him… he could become even better,” Kerr said.
“I saw so much potential there… I’m glad he learned his lesson, I’m glad
he listened.”

Kerr’s comments highlight a significant personal turnaround for Makgalwa,
whose improved work ethic has now been rewarded with a national team
selection.
