Nkanyiso Shinga’s long-awaited Kaizer Chiefs debut lasted just 80
minutes—and now the waiting game begins again, this time for altogether more
distressing reasons.
The former Portugal-based defender finally pulled on the famous Gold and
Black jersey against Richards Bay United, ending a seven-month vigil since
his arrival at Naturena at the start of the season. But what should have
been a career milestone quickly descended into misfortune when Shinga was
stretchered off with what sources fear is a serious Achilles injury.
A club insider has painted a bleak picture of the 24-year-old’s immediate
future, suggesting his maiden appearance may also prove to be his last of
the campaign.
“Shinga is not going to be fine now, but we don’t know the story. We left
Shinga at the hospital in Richards Bay. His season is done. First game …
He’s an unfortunate guy,” the source revealed to PSLSA.
While the club has yet to provide official confirmation, the early
indications point towards an Achilles problem—an injury that typically
demands between six to nine months on the sidelines. For a player who waited
the best part of a season just to make his bow, the cruel timing could
hardly be more devastating.
The left-back’s journey to this point has been one of patience and
perseverance. Having plied his trade in the Portuguese lower divisions,
Shinga arrived at Chiefs with the hope of establishing himself in South
African football’s most demanding environment. That opportunity, finally
granted against Richards Bay, has now been snatched away in the cruellest
fashion.
For Amakhosi, the timing is equally problematic. With the season entering
its decisive phase and defensive options already stretched, Shinga’s
potential absence represents yet another setback in a campaign that has
rarely run smoothly.
Medical assessments will determine the full extent of the damage, but early
indications suggest Shinga faces a long road to recovery—and the cruel
reality that his first taste of Chiefs action may also be his last for some
time.
