Soweto Derby Legends Clash to Rekindle Classic Rivalry at Ellis Park

Former Orlando Pirates captain Ronnie Zondi believes the famed Soweto
Derby, while still carrying immense weight, has changed from its fiercer
past.

Speaking at the launch of the upcoming Legends Soweto Derby at Ellis Park
Stadium on Monday, Zondi reflected on the evolution of the clash between
Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

“Times have changed,” Zondi observed. “A lot has toned down, and people
relate to each other better now. But the derby is still the derby—it carries
that same significance.” He pointed to the enduring excitement, with fans
traveling from across provinces to attend, often treating it as an
adventure. “It has not lost its essence, but it is different from what it
used to be.”

The legendary midfielder emphasized the central role of the two clubs in
South African football. “Without Pirates and Chiefs, you can’t have such a
big event. They bring stability to professional football, and every young
player aspires to play for one of them,” he said, while affirming his own
staunch loyalty to Pirates.

Zondi confirmed that the Pirates legends are approaching the match with a
competitive spirit. “We are grateful for the invitation to relive good
memories and build new friendships. We came to represent the badge, respect
the sponsors, and give our best. We’re still competitive at our age, and we
are here to win.”

The Legends Soweto Derby will kick off at Ellis Park Stadium at 15:00 on
February 7th, 2026.
