Former captain Innocent Maela has boldly declared that the current
Orlando Pirates squad is the most powerful the club has seen in years,
fueling a burning belief within the camp that a historic treble is
achievable this season.
Speaking at the unveiling of the newly renamed Orlando Amstel Arena, Maela
pointed to the team’s depth and balance as the foundation for their
confidence. Having already secured the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup this
campaign, the defender insists the ultimate prize—the DStv Premiership
title—is firmly in their sights.
“We do believe this season is definitely our season,” Maela stated. “So that
when it comes to the end of May, we will be celebrating the big fish that we
all want… it will be important for us to go out and make sure that we do
bring the league back home.”
When asked directly about the possibility of a domestic treble, Maela’s
answer was unequivocal. “[We can win a treble] Yes, definitely. Why? Because
of the squad that we have, the depth, the quality in all departments. I
think through all the years, this squad is definitely the strongest squad
we’ve been able to assemble, and it has shown.”
The numbers bolster his argument. Pirates sit just three points behind
defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and hold two critical games in hand,
placing their destiny firmly in their own grasp.
“So definitely, if everything goes well for us and the team pushes their
limits, it’s possible,” Maela concluded. “And I have full confidence that it
will happen.”
With the stage set at the Orlando Amstel Arena, Maela’s words
set a clear and ambitious target for the Buccaneers as they enter the
decisive phase of the season.
