KwaZulu-Natal side Richards Bay have secured the permanent signing of
winger Sanele Barns from Stellenbosch FC, PSLSA can confirm.
The 28-year-old returns to familiar surroundings, having previously played
for the Natal Rich Boyz before his move to Stellenbosch in July 2024. It is
understood that Barns fell out of the plans of new Stellenbosch coach Gavin
Hunt, prompting his release and a swift return to his former club.
Barns was a key and popular figure during his first stint at Richards Bay,
making 62 top-flight appearances where he contributed 10 goals and 11
assists. His influential performances even earned him a nomination for the
PSL Midfielder of the Season award for the 2023/24 campaign, eventually won
by Orlando Pirates’ Patrick Maswanganyi.
At Stellenbosch, Barns featured in 68 matches across all competitions,
including 22 appearances this season.
Officials from both clubs have been tight-lipped on the deal. Stellenbosch
FC maintained their policy of not commenting on transfer rumours, while
Richards Bay’s brand and marketing manager, Xolani Zungu, stated, “I’m not
at work, so I’m not aware of it.”
Barns is expected to be available for selection when Richards
Bay host Golden Arrows in their upcoming league match on Friday.
