Mamelodi Sundowns appear poised to offload Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel, with a move back to his home country on the cards.
The 26-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Greek side AE Kifisias, where he struggled for impact—making eight appearances without registering a goal or assist—leading to an early termination of the loan agreement.
With Sundowns having filled their foreign quota following the signing of Colombian striker Brayan Leon, there is no longer space for Esquivel in the squad. The club currently has foreign spots occupied by Chilean Marcelo Allende, Brazilian Arthur Sales, and Portuguese duo Miguel Reisinho and Nuno Santos.
This has opened the door for a potential exit, with Argentine top-flight club Instituto Cordoba reportedly showing interest in offering him a route out.
Esquivel arrived at Sundowns in January 2024 on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Club Atlético Lanús. However, his stay in South Africa has been fragmented, featuring loan spells at CA Talleres in Argentina before his recent stint in Greece. In total, he has made just 16 appearances for Sundowns, contributing two goals and one assist.
