Even with reduced minutes on the pitch, Samuel Julies remains a
cornerstone for University of Pretoria, serving as a vital leader and mentor
within the Motsepe Foundation Championship side.
The 34-year-old midfielder, now in his sixth season with AmaTuks, has
transitioned into a key dressing-room figure for head coach Kwanele Kopo.
While his starts have decreased, his experience and professionalism make him
an invaluable part of the matchday squad.
“I want to thank the university. I have been here for the past six years and
it’s a great achievement,” Julies told PSLSA. “I want to leave this jersey
in a better way than we found it. That’s why I have been here all this
time—to make sure when I retire, the next generation can find it in a much
better place.”
Julies has embraced his evolving role with maturity, focusing on the club’s
long-term stability rather than personal playing time. “I have adjusted to
that role. It comes down to being professional… They have to manage me and
I also have to manage myself,” he explained. “It’s something that makes
sense at my age, to use my experience to help the young boys.”
AmaTuks begin their 2026 campaign this afternoon against log leaders Milford
FC at Tuks Stadium. The club faces a crucial period, having registered only
three wins in 14 matches this season. Their promotion hopes, however, remain
alive, despite being hindered by eight draws. Julies’ leadership will be key
as the team navigates the decisive months ahead.
