Former Orlando Pirates and Malawi captain Joseph Kamwendo has made an
emotional return to his first professional club, Zimbabwean giants CAPS
United, where he will serve as both Second Assistant Coach and Head of
Development.
In an exclusive interview with PSLSA, the ex-midfielder confirmed his dual
role at the Harare-based club ahead of the new season, which kicks off in
February. He will work under head coach and former teammate, Takesure
Chiragwi.
“I am Head of Development and second assistant coach for the main team,”
Kamwendo stated. “The head coach is a local guy, Takesure Chiragwi. I
played with him as well.”
The appointment marks a full-circle moment for Kamwendo, who launched his
professional career at CAPS United before moving to Europe and later South
Africa.
“It means a lot because this was my first professional club,” he shared.
“This is the team that gave me the opportunity to play in Europe, so it
means a lot to come serve the team again. I’m honoured.”
Kamwendo, who made history in 2005 as the first foreign player to be
crowned Zimbabwe Soccer Star of the Year while at CAPS United, expressed
gratitude to club president Farai Jere. “I thank the club president,
Honourable Farai Jere, for giving me this opportunity. I am going to do my
best to bring back the glory days.”
The move follows Kamwendo’s recent stint as coach of Malawian side Creek
Sports FC, which ended in dismissal after a run of poor results earlier in
2025. He now looks to channel his extensive playing and coaching
experience into rebuilding the club where his journey began.
