Makola Confident AFCON Fatigue Won’t Derail Pirates’ Title Charge

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola has dismissed concerns
that the club’s delayed return from the AFCON break—and its high number of
Bafana Bafana representatives—could harm their Betway Premiership title
hopes.

Pirates went into the break leading the standings but resumed training later
than rivals such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. With nine players
called up for national duty, questions have been raised about fatigue ahead
of their return to league action against Sekhukhune United on January 24.

Makola, however, believes the squad’s depth and quality will offset any
disruption.

“I don’t think they are going to be affected in any way. Pirates have enough
depth in the squad,” Makola told the Siya crew. “If you look at the
positions of the players in the national team and the players that stayed
behind at Pirates, it’s like for like in terms of quality.”

He suggested a managed recovery plan for returning players, many of whom are
still young, could have them ready in time.

“They could have a week and a half of light recovery work, and by the time
the league resumes, all should be back fit and ready to put in a good show,”
he added.

Makola also pointed to added motivation for the Bafana contingent, with the
2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon.

“Players like Lebone Seema are raising their hands to go to the World Cup,”
he noted. “They have to perform well at club level first—that’s only going
to help Pirates in their push to win the league.”
