Insiders Downplay Mokwena to Chiefs Links, Cite Pirates History as Major Hurdle

Speculation linking former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena with a
move to Kaizer Chiefs has been dampened by club insiders, who point to his
deep-rooted history with rivals Orlando Pirates as a significant barrier.

Recent reports had suggested Mokwena was among the candidates being
considered should Amakhosi decide to make a coaching change. However, a
source close to the club has told PSLSA that such a move is highly unlikely
due to the coach’s strong affiliations.

“There’s no Rulani going to Chiefs. No, it will never happen,” the insider
stated emphatically. “Rulani is a Pirate. Rulani’s team is Pirates. Even his
father, they would disown him… Rulani himself is not interested in that.”

Despite this firm stance, the source acknowledged that Chiefs are poised to
review their coaching structure at the season’s end and will cast a wide net
in their search. The club is reportedly open to various profiles, not just
established names.

“Yeah, we have to look… You don’t have to look at big names anymore. Because
you see how Pirates have had success with lesser-known coaches,” the insider
added, hinting at a broader, more pragmatic approach to the recruitment
process.

Currently, the team remains under the guidance of co-coaches Khalil Ben
Youssef and Cedric Kaze. While Mokwena’s name appears far from the top of
the list, the club’s final decision will follow a thorough assessment of all
available options as they plan their next long-term coaching appointment.
