Another South African teenager is rising through the ranks in the United
Kingdom, joining a notable group of young footballers with Mzansi roots
making waves abroad.
Following in the footsteps of Camden Schaper and others like Elnino Gabi
Shelton and Khai Vally, a new name is emerging: sixteen-year-old Pano
Koumpounis.
The versatile defender, who is comfortable at centre-back, defensive
midfield, or right-back, has secured a scholarship at the Langley Football
Academy. His opportunity was facilitated by the academy’s director and
Norwich City legend, Grant Holt.
Koumpounis holds dual Greek and South African nationality and has been based
in England for three years. His progression has been rapid—he has already
captained Norfolk at Under-15 and Under-16 levels and featured for the
Norwich Elite Under-18 side.
Before his move, he developed in South Africa’s competitive youth
structures, representing the Southern Gauteng Under-13 provincial team and
facing academy sides from Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando
Pirates.
In the UK, he has continued to test himself against elite opposition,
playing against academy teams from clubs like Chelsea, Ipswich Town, and
Brentford.
While several English clubs are reportedly monitoring his progress,
Koumpounis remains focused on his development at Langley, balancing his
football growth with his education as his steady rise continues.
