Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has addressed his surprising move to
Tanzanian giants Simba SC, a transition confirmed by the club on Friday.
In a statement released on the Stellenbosch website, Barker described the
decision as emotionally complex but necessary for his professional
evolution. “It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for
Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm,” Barker
stated. “I can only wish the Club continued success in the future.”
He emphasized the scale of the new opportunity, calling it a pivotal step
for his career. “I believe that taking up a new and exciting challenge at
one of the biggest clubs on the continent is something I need to pursue to
further my own personal growth and ambitions as a coach. I’m grateful that
my time with Stellenbosch has helped open that door.”
Barker, who oversaw 309 matches during his tenure beginning in 2017, leaves
behind a significant legacy. He guided the club from the lower divisions
into the Premier Soccer League and to its first major trophy, the 2023
Carling Knockout. Furthermore, he led Stellenbosch to consecutive CAF
Confederation Cup qualifications, with a notable run to the quarter-finals
in their debut continental campaign last season.
Expressing his gratitude, Barker concluded, “I would like to thank each and
every person at the Club for playing such an important and influential role
in my time at Stellenbosch. I will forever cherish the memories we made
together.”
