Former Bafana Bafana defender Edward “Magents” Motale has expressed
strong belief that the national team is targeting the ultimate prize at the
upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following their bronze-medal finish
in Ivory Coast.
Speaking at the team’s send-off event at FNB Stadium last week, the Orlando
Pirates legend stated that head coach Hugo Broos and his technical team have
meticulously prepared and learned from their previous campaign.
“A win will be a very good start, confidently so. It will motivate
everybody, them and us, the supporters,” Motale told journalists.
The former CAF Champions League-winning captain emphasised that the
achievement in the last tournament has raised the team’s ambitions. “I think
they probably, Hugo Broos and Helman Mkhalele, did their homework very well,
and they did their corrections after the bronze. So, going to this one, I
think they’ll be gunning for gold,” he observed.
Bafana Bafana find themselves in a challenging Group D alongside COSAFA
rivals Angola and Zimbabwe, as well as record champions Egypt. Their
campaign begins against Angola on 22nd December, followed by clashes with
Egypt and Zimbabwe.
