Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Brent Carelse believes the Betway
Premiership title race will be decided on the final day of the season, with
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns locked in a tight battle at the top.
In an exclusive interview with PSLSA, Carelse highlighted the unprecedented
consistency of Pirates this campaign as the key factor in their lead, while
noting a rare dip in relentless form from long-time champions Sundowns.
“It’s difficult to predict this season—it’s going to go down to the last
day,” said Carelse. “Pirates don’t look like they’re going to slip up, and
Sundowns don’t look like they will either. It seems like both want to go all
the way.”
Carelse, who played for both clubs during his career, pointed to Pirates’
improved efficiency as their major transformation. “The difference this
season is their consistency in performance and results. In the past, they
might play well but not win—drawing or losing games they should have taken.
Now, they are consistently scoring and getting the points.”
He contrasted this with the defending champions. “We’ve been asking for
someone to challenge with consistency, and that’s been the difference.
Sundowns haven’t been as consistent as in previous seasons, and Pirates have
taken that opportunity.”
While acknowledging that Pirates deserve their place at the summit based on
current form, Carelse stopped short of naming a favourite. “That’s what
makes it so hard to predict right now. But finally, this season… I don’t
know, my brother. It’s going to be tense all the way.”
