South African coaches are continuing to expand their footprint across
the continent, with former SA U-20 coach Thabo Senong now strongly linked
with the head coach role at Zimbabwean giants Highlanders FC.
The Bulawayo-based club, which celebrates its centenary this month, is
searching for a new leader after parting ways with Dutch coach Pieter de
Jong. Siya sources indicate that Senong has been identified as a leading
candidate for the position.
Initially, the club’s financial benefactor Wicknell Chivayo reportedly
pushed for the appointment of former Zimbabwe striker Benjani Mwaruwari.
However, it is now understood that Mwaruwari—affectionately known as “The
Undertaker”—would likely be brought in as Sporting Director, paving the way
for Senong to take the technical reins.
This potential appointment adds to a growing wave of South African coaches
making their mark abroad. Pitso Mosimane blazed the trail with historic
success at Egypt’s Al Ahly, while names like Rulani Mokwena, Morena
Ramoreboli, and Fadlu Davids have since impressed in various leagues across
Africa.
Senong’s potential move to Highlanders—a club on the cusp of its 100-year
anniversary—underscores the rising reputation and demand for South African
tactical expertise. It also highlights a broader trend: as local coaches
continue to succeed beyond borders, their influence is reshaping dugouts and
football philosophies across the continent.
