Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says he is the happiest
coach in South Africa, with his side set to enter the new year atop the
Betway Premiership standings.
The Buccaneers claimed pole position over the Christmas break after Mamelodi
Sundowns failed to defeat Siwelele FC on Wednesday evening. Speaking ahead
of Saturday’s Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants, the
Moroccan-born mentor reflected on his joy in leading the iconic club.
“First of all, I am enjoying the moment here at Orlando Pirates. I enjoy
coaching such good players,” Ouaddou told the media. “Every morning when I
wake up and come to work, I am the happiest coach. It’s not an easy position
when you coach such a big club—there are many expectations. But honestly, I
am very happy. I do my job with a lot of happiness.”
Despite the strong start to the campaign, Ouaddou emphasized that it is too
early to fully judge the team’s progress. “We are aligned with the club’s
targets,” he noted, adding that a full evaluation will come at the end of
the season.
“We will have time then to assess the work done. But even evaluating is
difficult because you work with many people. I believe in using the
competencies within the club—my staff, most of whom are South African and
Tunisian, play a crucial role. I came here alone, but I trust their
abilities 100%. Together, we are working toward our goals.”
For now, Ouaddou’s focus remains firmly on the upcoming matches—starting
with Saturday’s final in Polokwane. “There are only games to play and to
win. We approach every game with the same character, the same pleasure, and
the same commitment to deliver for our club and our fans,” he said.
“If we can bring them a second trophy this season, it will be wonderful.”
Pirates have already secured the MTN 8 title earlier this term and now aim
to add the Carling Knockout trophy as they continue their pursuit of
silverware under Ouaddou’s leadership.
