As Kaizer Chiefs prepare for their historic CAF Confederation Cup group
stage opener against Egypt’s Al Masry this Sunday, the club’s coaching staff
faces a welcome but difficult challenge: a surplus of in-form strikers.
According to insiders, all of Amakhosi’s forwards are fit and training,
creating a “nice headache” for the selectors as they decide who to take on
the crucial trip to Egypt and, more importantly, who to start.
The squad boasts a deep attacking roster, including Ashley Du Preez,
Tashreeq Morris, Wandile Duba, Etiosa Ighodaro, Khanyisa Mayo, and young
Naledi Hlongwane. This is further bolstered by versatile attackers like
Mduduzi Shabalala and Pule Mmodi, who can also operate in forward roles.
An insider highlighted the depth of the selection dilemma, pointing to the
specific qualities of different players. “I guess the main striker is going
to be Khanyisa Mayo… but also Etiosa Ighodaro. Then, when do you bring in
Flavio (Da Silva)? Flavio is a goalscorer… a type of guy who can score 10
goals,” the source revealed.
The source particularly emphasized the lethal efficiency of Flavio Da Silva,
noting, “He has played about four or five games, but he has scored four
goals. He came on as a sub in most of the games, and he scores.”
This tough decision is compounded by the fact that nearly every forward has
scored this season, with only Tashreeq Morris and Ashley Du Preez yet to
find the net. The coaches must now weigh recent form, player profiles, and
tactical needs for the continental fixture.
PSLSA reached out to Kaizer Chiefs for confirmation on the final traveling
squad and departure details, but no response was received before
publication. The team is expected to depart for Egypt on Thursday.
