Isaacs Backs Chiefs’ “Element of Surprise” for CAF Glory

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs believes the club’s
relative anonymity on the continental stage could be their secret weapon,
tipping them for a deep run—and even victory—in their historic CAF
Confederation Cup campaign.

Speaking exclusively to PSLSA, Isaacs drew parallels to the club’s
impressive run to the 2021 CAF Champions League final, suggesting that
freedom from local pressure and the “element of surprise” will be key
advantages.

“In South Africa, everybody knows Chiefs. You understand? So the element of
surprise is there, and I foresee them going to the finals or even winning
the tournament,” Isaacs stated.

He elaborated that unlike PSL opponents who are deeply familiar with
Amakhosi’s players and style, African clubs lack this knowledge. “Locally
there is a lot of pressure and negativity. But these [African] guys don’t
know Ashley Du Preez, they don’t know whatever… the players are free to go
there because they are playing against people they don’t know.”

While acknowledging the current Chiefs squad hasn’t played together as long
as the experienced 2021 group, Isaacs remains confident. He also praised
Orlando Pirates as the in-form local team but expressed optimism for all
South African sides in continental competitions.

Beyond tactics, Isaacs emphasized that success in Africa demands a complete
team effort. “It’s a whole team effort. Even strikers need to defend. Even
defenders need to score goals. They have to be 100% in every aspect of the
game.”

Ultimately, he concluded that mentality will be the deciding factor. “It’s
the mentality that needs to be 100%, which I think they will have. They need
to be arrogant when they go there and believe. The sky is the limit.”

Kaizer Chiefs are set to depart for Egypt ahead of their maiden Group Stage
opener against Al Masry this Sunday.
