Agent Reveals How Chiefs’ Last-Minute U-Turn Cost Lekay a Dream Move

The agent of Siwelele striker Wayde Lekay has revealed how a proposed
move to Kaizer Chiefs collapsed at the eleventh hour, leaving the player in
the lurch after he had been released from his previous contract.

Speaking exclusively to PSLSA, agent Gary Cassisa detailed the
behind-the-scenes events from three seasons ago when Lekay was invited for a
trial at Naturena. The trial period, overseen by then-head coach Arthur
Zwane, also included Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, who was subsequently signed.

According to Cassisa, Lekay’s deal had progressed far beyond a simple trial.
“They were actually going to sign him,” Cassisa stated. “They told me to get
him out of his TS Galaxy contract. I got him out, they were gonna sign him
and the next thing Zwane turned around and said ‘No’.”

This last-minute reversal left Lekay without a club. He has since had spells
at Cape Town City, Swedish side FC Trollhättan, and Churchill Brothers in
India, before landing at Siwelele at the start of the current season.

The incident casts a shadow over that particular transfer window for Chiefs.
Bimenyimana, the striker signed instead of Lekay, was released after just
one season despite scoring eight goals and being a fan favourite. His own
exit was shrouded in mystery, with the Burundian later hinting at a negative
experience, stating, “Too many things happened to me while I was there
because of someone there.”

Despite the past disappointment, Cassisa remains a firm believer in his
client’s ability. “He could (still) do the job at Chiefs,” he asserted,
suggesting that Lekay possesses the quality to perform at the highest level
in South African football.
