Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has clarified his decision to
bench regular starter Mbekezeli Mbokazi for the team’s recent 3-1 victory
over Golden Arrows, citing the need to manage the defender’s workload.
Mbokazi, a consistent presence in the starting line-up this season, was
introduced only in the 80th minute of the match as the Buccaneers secured a
crucial win.
Speaking ahead of the Carling Knockout Cup semi-final against Richards Bay,
Ouaddou explained that the choice was a strategic one, made in conjunction
with his technical and performance staff to preserve the player’s fitness.
“We have to take into consideration the number of competitions and the
physical integrity of the players,” Ouaddou stated. He acknowledged the
delicate balance between squad rotation and maintaining competitive
sharpness, adding, “You cannot change all the time and lose that edge.”
The coach pointed to Mbokazi’s demanding schedule, which has included
commitments for both club and country since the season began, as the primary
reason for his reduced role.
“Mbokazi has been exposed to a heavy load since the beginning of the
season… We thought… that it was the right moment to give him a little
bit of rest as well,” Ouaddou said.
He also noted that the late substitution was a tactical move based on the
flow of the game and praised the defender’s impact upon entering the pitch.
The decision appears to be a calculated move to keep key players fresh as
Orlando Pirates prepare for their crucial cup clash this weekend.
