Sundowns Drawn Against Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger in CAF Champions League Group Stage

Mamelodi Sundowns have discovered their path in the group stages of the
CAF Champions League after comfortably advancing with a 7-1 aggregate
victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars.

The draw, conducted in Randburg on Monday with African legends Christopher
Katongo and Alex Song in attendance, placed the South African champions in
Group C. They will face Sudan’s Al Hilal, Algeria’s MC Alger, and DR Congo’s
St Eloi Lupopo—the very side that eliminated Orlando Pirates from the
competition.

This year, Sundowns carry the sole hope of South Africa as they make their
11th consecutive appearance in the group stages.

The draw sets the stage for a highly anticipated return to South Africa for
former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, who is now at the helm of MC Alger.
This reunion adds a compelling narrative to the group phase.

Sundowns will be determined for a stronger start this campaign after a
challenging group stage last season. A slow beginning under former co-coach
Manqoba Mngqithi required a mid-season rescue from current coach Miguel
Cardoso, who guided the team on a run that ultimately took them to the
final, where they fell to Egypt’s Pyramids FC.

CAF Champions League Group C:

  • Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)
  • Al Hilal (Sudan)
  • MC Alger (Algeria)
  • St Eloi Lupopo (DR Congo)
