A dramatic, stoppage-time header from debutant Eroine Agnikoi secured a
thrilling 2-1 victory for Marumo Gallants over Chippa United at the Dr
Molemela Stadium on Sunday.
Fresh from their Carling Knockout triumph over Mamelodi Sundowns, Gallants
handed debuts to Ibrahim Bance and the eventual match-winner, Agnikoi.
Chippa United, looking to rebound from a heavy defeat to Richards Bay,
recalled Sammy Seabi and Harold Majadibodu.
The home side dominated possession from the start but struggled to convert
their control into clear chances. The first half was a story of
near-misses for Gallants. First, Bheki Mabuza forced a fine save from
goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, and then Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo saw his
powerful strike cannon off the post, leaving the teams deadlocked at
halftime.
The breakthrough finally came on the hour mark. Sekela Sithole, given
space outside the box, unleashed a shot that took a crucial deflection and
sailed in off the upright, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
Chippa United pressed hard for an equalizer, and their persistence paid
off with just three minutes of regular time remaining. Substitute Bienvenu
Eva Nga showcased excellent control to bring down a cross and calmly slot
home his first goal of the season, seemingly rescuing a point for the
visitors.
However, in a stunning twist, Gallants had the final say. In the dying
moments of stoppage time, defender Eroine Agnikoi rose highest to power a
header into an empty net, marking his debut with a match-winning goal and
sending the Dr Molemela Stadium into delirium.
