A combination of suspensions and injuries in the Bafana Bafana defence
has created a golden opportunity for Mamelodi Sundowns’ Malibongwe Khoza,
who has been called up to the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
With key defenders like Siyabonga Ngezana (suspended), Grant Kekana, Mothobi
Mvala, and young prospect Ime Okon all unavailable, coach Hugo Broos has
turned to Khoza. This call-up is a significant chance for the centre-back to
stake his claim for a spot in the final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations
early next year.
Broos explained that the situation aligns perfectly with his philosophy of
integrating younger players into the national team setup. “If we hadn’t done
that now, we would have an old team,” Broos stated after announcing his
squad. “With the suspension of Ngezana and the injury of Okon, why not give
him a chance… If we have to put him in the team, then we put him in the
team.”
While Khoza has previously showcased his versatility by playing in central
midfield for South Africa’s CHAN team, Broos has clear plans for him. The
coach intends to deploy the player in his best position to build his
confidence.
“With a young guy, I think you have to put him in his best position and I
think his best position is centre back,” the Belgian tactician confirmed.
Bafana Bafana will begin their camp on Monday to prepare for the crucial
qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda, with Khoza looking to make the most
of his unexpected chance.
