Veteran Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has tipped Orlando
Pirates as serious contenders to reach the CAF Champions League final this
season, citing their strengthened squad and resilient mentality under new
coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Despite a shaky start to the campaign, Khune believes the Buccaneers have
found their rhythm at a crucial time, a turnaround underscored by their
recent MTN8 victory—a record fourth consecutive title in the competition.
According to Khune, this success has provided a significant morale boost as
they navigate the continental challenge.
He pointed to the team’s strategic recruitment as a key factor, noting,
“They’ve beefed up the squad with experienced players, players who are
playing in the national team, like [Tshegofatso] Mabasa and [Katlego]
Kwinika. You can see they are now gelling together.”
Khune also highlighted the team’s growing resilience, using their recent
Champions League match against Lioli as an example. “Even in the first half
they struggled a bit, but in the second half they managed to get three
goals. That kind of response shows character,” he explained.
Building on their semi-final exit to Pyramids FC last season, Khune is
confident that Pirates have the experience and drive to go even further this
time. “I don’t see them not going further than the group stages,” he stated.
“They stand a good chance of going all the way to the final. They’ve pushed
hard to be where they are, and I think they’re going to surprise a lot of
teams.”
