Broos’ Decision-Making: The Process Behind Choosing Blom Despite Agent Criticism

On Thursday, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos made a surprise recall
of St. Louis City midfielder Njabulo Blom to his latest squad, just one
day after Blom’s agent Rob Moore pointed out how the former Kaizer Chiefs
player deserved a chance.

Broos had previously included Blom in his preliminary squad but excluded
him from the final 23-member squad that played friendly matches against
Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the time, the Belgian reasoned that the 23-year old did not make the
cut because he was not playing regularly for his Major League Soccer club
St. Louis City. However, Blom’s agent Moore strongly disagreed with this
decision and criticised Broos for not giving Blom a chance.

Moore went as far as compiling stats for some players who were selected
at Bafana but had played far less minutes than Blom. “At that time Blom
had played seven games, was suspended for the eighth game and he had
played 92% of the minutes in those games,” Moore said.

played far less minutes. We’re talking about a league that is pretty
decent, the MLS and he’s playing for a club with 92% of the minutes who
are top of the league.”

On Thursday, Broos announced Blom in his latest squad to face Eswatini
and Ivory Coast in international friendlies, in a midfield that also has
Teboho Mokoena, Sithole and Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
