Highly rated Liverpool FC youngster Carter Pinnington has added an
exciting new dimension to his rising career after confirming that he is
eligible to represent South Africa at senior international level.
The 19-year-old centre-back, who has been part of Liverpool’s setup since
the age of seven, continues to progress steadily through the club’s ranks.
He signed his first professional contract in May 2024.
His development has not gone unnoticed. The defender features regularly for
the club’s Under-21 side in Premier League 2 and has also earned inclusion
in a senior matchday squad for a Carabao Cup fixture in October 2025—a clear
indication of the faith Liverpool has in his long-term potential.
Primarily operating as a central defender, Pinnington has built a reputation
as a modern ball-playing centre-back. Comfortable in possession, composed
under pressure, and strong in his positional play, he has also shown
tactical flexibility by stepping into deeper midfield roles when required—a
trait that continues to enhance his profile within Liverpool’s system.
However, beyond his club progress, it is his international eligibility that
is now drawing attention closer to home.
Despite having represented England at Under-18 level, Pinnington has
confirmed that South Africa is a genuine option for his senior international
future.
“I can represent South Africa—my dad was born there,” he revealed in an
interview with the club’s media team.
That simple statement has opened the door to what could become a significant
addition for Bafana Bafana.
South African football has increasingly looked abroad in recent years to
identify dual-national talents capable of strengthening the national team,
particularly in key positions. In Pinnington, there is not just potential
but a profile that fits the modern demands of international football: a
defender comfortable building from the back, tactically aware, and exposed
to elite development structures from a young age.
With Hugo Broos continuing to shape his squad with a balance of experience
and youth, the emergence of players like Pinnington presents an opportunity
to further strengthen defensive depth. While no decision has yet been made
regarding his international allegiance, the mere possibility of adding a
