Kaizer Chiefs coach Cedric Kaze believes that inconsistency and a string
of injuries to key players have proven costly for the team this season.
At the start of the campaign, Amakhosi showed signs of a side capable of
challenging for the Betway Premiership title, but in recent weeks they
endured three consecutive league defeats before bouncing back with a 1-0
victory over Durban City on Sunday at FNB Stadium.
Speaking to the media after the match, Kaze said the team lacked
consistency, which was undermined by injuries and suspensions that prevented
him from fielding a settled starting eleven throughout the season.
“You know every team needs consistency to get better results and it’s
something that maybe people don’t talk enough, but I think that we have been
very, very, very unfortunate in terms of injuries and suspensions that have
crippled the team and didn’t allow us to have better performance into our
lineup,” Kaze observed when asked about the difficulty of maintaining a
consistent first XI.
“I believe that if we don’t have those much of injuries we would have been
more consistent than we are,” he added.
Currently, Chiefs have Brandon Petersen, Rushwin Dortley, Given Msimango,
Nkanyiso Shinga, George Matlou, and Reeve Frosler on the injury list, while
Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa missed the Durban City clash due to
suspension. Ethan Chislett also experienced discomfort just a day before the
game.
Amakhosi’s next Betway Premiership encounter is against Magesi FC on
Saturday at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 15h30.
