With Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze under
fire, PSLSA lists the top 10 coaches in Africa, previously linked
with Amakhosi, currently available on the market.
10. Ernst Middendorp
After his first spell at Chiefs ended in March 2007, it came as a shock
when Amakhosi brought back Middendorp in December 2018, after his role as
Technical Director at Bangkok United. The German recently left Durban City
in that capacity.
9. Dan Malesela
Malesela has been suggested by a number of pundits and legends as one of
the ideal coaches who can revive Kaizer Chiefs, given his philosophy. The
former Chippa United and TS Galaxy coach has been unattached since leaving
Baroka in October 2025.
8. Stuart Baxter
Baxter remains the most successful former Chiefs coach in the last decade,
although his second spell between 2021 and 2022 was less spectacular. The
former Bafana Bafana coach was linked with a coaching post of the Zimbabwe
national team in November last year and has been without a club since
leaving Boavista in June 2025.
7. Raul Caneda
Caneda has been linked with Chiefs for a few seasons, and after being out
of a job for five years, he recently managed Chinese Super League club
Zhejiang FC from January 2025 but left the club at the end of the year.
The Spanish coach has mainly worked in the Middle East.
6. Chris Hughton
Hughton has been unattached since leaving Ghana in January 2024. The
former Brighton and Hove Albion coach was heavily linked with a coaching
vacancy at the Zimbabwe national team before they settled for Marian
Marinica in November last year.
5. Benni McCarthy
Even though he is still attached to the Kenya national team, McCarthy
could not hide his desire to return to club football, suggesting in an
interview on 947’s MSW that he would take the opportunity to coach Chiefs,
however, they have not been in contact with him yet.
4. Aliou Cisse
Cisse’s future as coach of the Libyan national team is currently in doubt,
after the federation confirmed that he and his staff have not been paid
for eight months. The Senegalese coach famously led his nation to the
Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2022.
3. Marcel Koller
Koller has been without a club since leaving Al Ahly in April 2025, after
he joined them in September 2022. The Swiss coach won multiple trophies
with the Egyptian giants, including two CAF Champions League trophies.
2. Walid Regragui
Regragui was increasingly under pressure after Morocco were edged by
Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final on home soil. Reports suggest
that the Moroccan coach is as good as gone. The 50-year-old mentor was in
charge for three-and-a-half years, after previously managing Wydad
Casablanca.
1. Pitso Mosimane
Mosimane was heavily linked with a return to Mamelodi Sundowns, but head
coach Miguel Cardoso has held on to his job after an upturn in results and
performances. The former Bafana Bafana coach has been without a club since
leaving Esteghlal in January 2025.
