Makgopa Joins Elite Company? A Look at the PSL’s Deadliest Marksmen Against a Single Opponent

After Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa further cemented his
status as a Kaizer Chiefs tormentor by scoring his fifth goal against the
Soweto rivals, PSLSA delves into the PSL record books to identify
the players who have feasted on one opponent more than any other.

Makgopa put the final nail in the coffin during the latest Soweto derby,
coming off the bench to score the third goal in Pirates’ comprehensive 3-0
victory. The strike took his personal tally against Amakhosi to five,
equaling the number he has also netted against SuperSport United.

The Bafana Bafana forward’s love affair with scoring against the Glamour
Boys began long before he donned the black and white of the Buccaneers. His
first goal against Chiefs came in April 2021 while playing for Baroka,
securing a 1-1 draw in a league encounter. Since making the move to Pirates
ahead of the 2022/23 season, ‘Ngwana Sesi’ has continued to be a persistent
thorn in the side of the Naturena-based outfit.

His derby exploits include being the sole goal-scorer in a 1-0 league win in
November 2023, netting the equalizer in a 2-1 victory in May 2025, and
finding the back of the net in the heartbreaking 2-1 Nedbank Cup final
defeat, where his equalizer was ultimately rendered meaningless by Yusuf
Maart’s late winner.

Remarkably, Makgopa achieved his latest feat against Chiefs while shaking
off a knock that had kept him out of the preceding match against Mamelodi
Sundowns.

While five goals against a single rival is a impressive achievement, the PSL
has seen far more dominant scoring feats over the years.

According to OptaJabu, legendary striker Siyabonga Nomvethe sits at the top
of the charts, having found the net against AmaZulu on a staggering 11
occasions during his illustrious career. Nomvethe was also particularly
prolific against Cape Town Spurs, scoring ten goals when the Cape side was
known as Ajax Cape Town.

A host of other notable names are not far behind, each having scored nine
goals against a specific opponent. This group includes Khama Billiat
(against Free State Stars), the prolific Collins Mbesuma and Katlego Mphela
(both against Maritzburg United), current star Peter Shalulile (against TS
Galaxy), and former SuperSport United striker Bradly Grobler (against Kaizer
Chiefs).
