Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners has seen limited playing time
recently, prompting debate over whether head coach Miguel Cardoso’s
selection choices are justified. The statistics from matches with and
without the Bafana Bafana forward offer an interesting perspective.
Rayners began the season in strong form, continuing the momentum from his
24-goal campaign in 2024/25. However, after a medical scare in October led
to a brief absence from club and national duty, his role has become less
certain. Despite returning to fitness and featuring for Sundowns late last
year, his omission from South Africa’s final AFCON squad was a surprise.
His irregular use since the AFCON break has raised questions, especially
after he missed both CAF Champions League matches against Al Hilal—games in
which Sundowns managed only one point.
But do Sundowns truly perform better with Rayners on the field?
In the CAF Champions League, Sundowns have played four matches without
Rayners this season (including the second preliminary round), winning only
two—a 50% win rate. In the two matches he has featured in, they also won
only one, maintaining a 50% win rate with him.
In the Betway Premiership, Sundowns have played three league games without
Rayners, winning two—a 66.6% win rate. In the 12 league matches he has been
part of, they have won seven, translating to a slightly lower 58% win rate
when he plays.
Individually, Rayners has maintained a solid scoring record, with 9 goals in
18 matches across all competitions—a strike rate of 50%.
While the win percentages alone do not show a decisive advantage with or
without him, Rayners’ consistent goal threat remains a valuable asset for
Sundowns as they compete on multiple fronts.
