Johannes Seizes His Chance: From Exit Links to Key Role at Sundowns

Defender Kegan Johannes’ future at Mamelodi Sundowns appears to have
taken a decisive turn. After being linked with a departure earlier in the
season—including a loan move to Siwelele FC that fell through—the
24-year-old is now firmly in the club’s plans.

Following the Africa Cup of Nations break, Johannes has started two
consecutive Betway Premiership matches as a central defender, helping the
team keep clean sheets against Orbit College and Sekhukhune United. These
performances are understood to have impressed both the management and
technical team.

His situation has shifted significantly. While another exit attempt was
anticipated in this transfer window, Johannes is now expected to remain at
Chloorkop for the rest of the season. There is growing confidence within his
camp that a longer-term future at the Tshwane giants is possible if his
current trajectory continues.

With six appearances already across all competitions—matching his total for
the entire previous season—Johannes is taking his opportunity. As
established defenders like Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana enter their 30s,
Sundowns are increasingly focused on developing younger defensive options
for the future.

While the club has other promising talents like Malibongwe
Khoza, Khulumani Ndamane, and Keanu Cupido, the final months of the campaign
will be crucial for Johannes. Barring a major change, his strong recent form
has placed him in an excellent position to secure his place at Sundowns
beyond the current season.
