Soweto Legends to Reignite Rivalry in Special Return to Ellis Park

The iconic Soweto Derby is set for a legendary return to Ellis
Park Stadium on 7 February 2026. This will be the first fixture between
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the venue since the tragic events of
April 2001. However, this edition will carry a celebratory tone, as it will
feature the legends who defined these two Soweto giants.

The match was announced at a press conference at Ellis Park on Monday by
organisers Puzzle Pictures. Khama Modise of Puzzle Pictures stated it was a
great honour to reunite the clubs through their former stars, emphasizing
that the derby’s significance remains undiminished at any level.

“This event has been carefully planned, and we are excited to confirm
tickets are now officially on sale through TicketPro and all its outlets,
including Spar nationwide,” said Modise. “We are honoured to be joined by
representatives of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates—institutions that
shaped the soul of our game. Most importantly, we are privileged to welcome
the legends themselves, the men who built this historic rivalry, inspired
generations, and carried South African football on their shoulders.”

Modise explained that the Legends Derby was conceived to honour football’s
journey in South Africa. “What better way to celebrate how far football has
come than by bringing the legends back to the pitch where so many
unforgettable memories were made? Today is about legacy, respect, and unity
through football.”

He also revealed an added incentive: the winning team will earn the right to
face an International 11 side in April. “We thought it made sense to kick
off with these two teams, with the winner facing an International 11. I can
see the players already look ready and fit—it’s unbelievable to see they’re
still in shape. We look forward to this, and we urge fans to come in big
numbers, bring your friends and family. These are games you do not want to
miss.”

The launch was attended by a host of famous ex-players, including Orlando
Pirates legends such as Ronnie Zondi, Lucky Lekgwathi, Benson Mhlongo, Mpho
Makola, Lehlohonolo Majoro, Oupa Manyisa, Happy Jele, Katlego Mashego, and
Sifiso Myeni. Kaizer Chiefs were represented by greats like Morgan Gould and
Thuso Phala.
