Sundowns Praised for Retaining “Crucial Squad Player” Mkhulise, Deemed a Potential Starter for Chiefs or Pirates

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Siyanda Zwane has endorsed the club’s decision to extend Sphelele Mkhulise’s contract, arguing the midfielder possesses the quality to start for rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Mkhulise, 29, recently signed a new two-year deal with Sundowns, including an option for a further year. Despite limited playing time—making only six appearances with two starts this season—Zwane believes retaining him is a smart move.

“I am happy the club extended his stay,” Zwane told PSLSA. “The fans love him, and the club clearly sees him as an important member, even if he doesn’t play regularly.”

Zwane pointed out that Mkhulise faces stiff competition from consistent performers like Marcelo Allende but has always delivered when called upon. He highlighted the player’s specific value in breaking down defensive teams.

“He understands spaces and pockets, plays between the lines, and draws defenders out. He’s technically sound, keeps possession well, and has a high football IQ,” Zwane explained. “Losing a player of that calibre would be like shooting yourself in the foot.”

While hoping Mkhulise finds greater opportunities, Zwane is confident the coaching staff’s belief in him was key to the renewal. He also made a bold claim about the player’s standing in the league.

“I believe if he joined a team like Pirates, he would start—no disrespect to their players. The same goes for Kaizer Chiefs, looking at their current squads. That’s why it was vital for Sundowns to keep him.”
