Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Bongani Sam has officially completed a
move to a new Betway Premiership club, with all paperwork now finalized.
After spending nearly a year without playing at Chiefs—eventually leaving
when his contract was terminated following a long-term injury—the
28-year-old left-back has been registered with the PSL by Chippa United.
Sam, who is from the Eastern Cape, had trained with Chippa earlier in the
season without securing a deal under former coach Luc Eymael, and also had a
brief stint with TS Galaxy that did not lead to a contract.
He returned to train with his hometown club toward the end of last year
under head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi. Despite the AFCON break delaying a final
decision, the club remained interested in signing him.
Sam recently took part in Chippa United’s mid-season training camp in
Johannesburg and is now eligible to play. A source confirms he could feature
when the team resumes their Betway Premiership campaign this Saturday
against Orbit College at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg.
Chippa United head into the match winless in their last nine league games
but will draw some confidence from ending 2025 with consecutive goalless
draws against Siwelele and Kaizer Chiefs. The Chilli Boys currently sit at
the bottom of the standings with nine points, four points from safety and
two behind 15th-placed Magesi.
