Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba has openly recognized the
intensified title challenge posed by Orlando Pirates this season,
attributing the Soweto giants’ strong position to their strategic signings
and focused squad.
In an unusual shift, Pirates currently lead the Betway Premiership by two
points with a game in hand, disrupting Sundowns’ typical mid-season
dominance as they pursue a historic ninth consecutive title.
Speaking at the Nedbank Cup last 32 draw in Sandton, Modiba conceded the
race will be demanding. “It’s tough. Pirates are doing well and so are other
teams. The reason we are behind is not collecting maximum points… but I
think it’s good for our league,” he stated.
He highlighted Pirates’ reinforced depth as a key advantage, especially with
their absence from continental competition. “You can see the squad that
Pirates has. They’ve got depth… Their full focus is going to be on the
Nedbank Cup and the league. For us, it’s to make sure we defend our title.
It’s not going to be an easy one this season.”
Modiba specifically praised Pirates’ recruitment: “They signed well. It
shows the experience and quality they have.”
While acknowledging the threat, Sundowns have also bolstered their squad
during the January window with signings including the notable acquisition of
former Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng. Modiba expressed optimism about the
new arrival: “He’s a very good signing for us. He brings quality into the
team… It’s a very quality signing for us.”
Sundowns discovered their Nedbank Cup last 32 opponent at the draw, where
they were paired with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Gomora United.
