As one of the first Betway Premiership clubs back in training, Kaizer
Chiefs are preparing for the league’s restart. Here are five critical
storylines for Amakhosi supporters to follow:
1. Defensive Reinforcements Return
Chiefs are set to welcome back key defenders Given Msimango and Rushwin
Dortley from long-term injuries. Msimango recently rejoined the squad
ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup trip to Egypt. Dortley, after a minor
setback cost him a place in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON squad, is also nearing a
much-anticipated return, which will significantly bolster the backline.
2. Salvaging the Continental Campaign
Chiefs face pressure to rescue their CAF Confederation Cup run. With just
one point from their opening two Group D matches, failure to advance to
the knockout stages could seriously impact the futures of co-coaches
Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. Turning around their continental form
is an urgent priority.
3. Can Maboe Maintain His Momentum?
Midfielder Lebohang Maboe emerged as a bright spot late in 2025. After a
fitness-delayed debut, his energy and creativity provided a vital spark in
Chiefs’ midfield. The question now is whether he can continue that
influential form and become a consistent driving force for the team.
4. Mayo’s Make-or-Break Moment
Striker Ashley Mayo, on loan from CR Belouizdad, has struggled with
injuries and impact, scoring just once in six appearances. With his loan
spell underway, he is in a fight to prove his worth. If his difficulties
persist, he is unlikely to earn a permanent deal with the Soweto giants.
5. Resolution for Experienced Striker Morris
Veteran striker Terrence Morris finds himself in a challenging position,
having not featured this season alongside others like Nkanyiso Shinga and
Ethan Chislett. As an experienced PSL campaigner, his situation is
particularly notable. His representatives are scheduled for talks with
club management to find a solution, with a loan move reportedly not
currently on his agenda.
