Matías Esquivel has returned to Mamelodi Sundowns following the early
termination of his loan spell with Greek Super League side A.E. Kifisia.
The Argentine playmaker had joined Kifisia with the option for the club to
make the move permanent at the end of the season, but that clause will now
not be exercised after a difficult six-month spell in Greece.
Esquivel struggled to make an impact during his time at the club,
registering no goals and no assists across eight appearances in all
competitions.
Kifisia had announced the player’s arrival on their official social media
platforms earlier this season, confirming that Esquivel had signed a
one-year cooperation agreement. At the time, the club welcomed him as a
midfielder and wished him success, though his stay ultimately proved
short-lived.
Esquivel is the latest player to exit Mamelodi Sundowns, with his future at
the Betway Premiership champions having been uncertain since August 2025.
The forward has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter
in a star-studded Sundowns squad, despite featuring sporadically over the
past two campaigns.
Across the last two seasons, Esquivel managed 16 appearances in all
competitions for the Brazilians, but consistency and sustained game time
remained elusive.
His return now leaves Sundowns with a decision to make regarding the
25-year-old’s next step, whether that be another loan opportunity or a fresh
attempt to break into the first-team picture in Tshwane.
