Kaizer Chiefs to Stand Pat in January Window, Citing Squad Depth

Insider Points to Returning Injured Players and Balanced Roster as
Reason for Quiet Window

While the January transfer window is open and many clubs are looking to
strengthen, Kaizer Chiefs are expected to be inactive, with a club source
indicating they believe their squad is already well-equipped for the
remainder of the season.

An insider close to the club revealed to PSLSA that Amakhosi’s management
feels they have a “well-balanced squad” and that the return of several
players from injury will provide sufficient depth, eliminating any urgent
need for new signings.

The source posed a series of rhetorical questions to underscore the point:
“Who do you sign? To come and do what? If you are saying you are signing,
then for which position? You sign a striker; you have too many of them.
Midfield, you can’t. Defence you can’t because there are [enough]. And these
are not guys who are just squad players.”

The insider then detailed the competition across the pitch:

  • In midfield, George Matlou has become a regular alongside Lebohang
Maboe, with Mshini (Nkosingiphile Ngcobo) also available.
  • At right-back, Reeve Frosler is out of the lineup, while a now-fit
    Thabiso Monyane provides another option.
  • In central defence, Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango have returned.
  • On the left, Bradley Cross is present alongside Nkanyiso Shinga, who
    is yet to feature.
  • On the wings, the recent returns of Asanele Velebayi and Lilepo from
injury, plus Luke Baartman’s promising performance against TS Galaxy,
are seen as having addressed previous concerns.

Chiefs undertook significant recruitment at the start of the season,
bringing in players including Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Nkanyiso Shinga,
Ethan Chislett, Lebohang Maboe, Sphesihle Ndlovu, Flavio Silva, Etiosa
Ighodaro, and Khanyisa Mayo (on loan). The club now appears confident that
this group, bolstered by returning fitness, can see the campaign through.
