Basadien on Breaking Into Sundowns: “It’s a Fight for Your Place”

Fawaaz Basadien has spoken candidly about the challenge of earning a
starting spot at Mamelodi Sundowns, as he continues to adapt to life at the
reigning Betway Premiership champions.

The 29-year-old defender, who joined from Stellenbosch FC, has found minutes
hard to come by in a star-studded squad. This season, he has made just seven
appearances across all competitions, with only three starts, as he competes
with established names like Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga.

Embracing the High-Stakes Environment
Speaking to the club’s official magazine, Basadien acknowledged the
difficulty of breaking into one of South Africa’s most demanding setups but
emphasized his commitment to the challenge.

“Of course, adapting to a new setup and earning your place in a team of such
quality takes time,” Basadien admitted. “However, I understand and respect
that I must fight for my place, as we have some exceptional defenders. That
motivates me to work harder every day.”

He also highlighted the pride and responsibility that comes with
representing the club. “I am fully aware of the responsibility that comes
with the badge.”

Confident of Adding Value
Despite limited opportunities so far, the former Stellies captain remains
positive about his ability to contribute as the season progresses.

“I feel confident that my skills and experience can add value to what
Sundowns want to achieve on the pitch,” he stated. “I want to bring
consistency, energy, and leadership every time I step onto the field and
help the team maintain our high standards.”

Basadien’s journey at Chloorkop reflects the intense competition within
Sundowns’ ranks, as he patiently awaits his chance to make a more decisive
impact.
