Fresh from appointing Steve Barker as their new head coach, Tanzanian
giants Simba SC are reportedly considering a move for Stellenbosch FC
assistant coach Wesley Sergel to complete their new technical setup in Dar
es Salaam.
Sources close to the club indicate that Sergel has emerged as a candidate
to potentially reunite with Barker at Simba.
“His assistant, Wesley, could go with him to Simba. There is a discussion
between Simba and Stellenbosch about the assistant,” a source told PSLSA.
Barker recently ended his nearly eight-year tenure at Stellenbosch, a
transformative period in the club’s history. He guided the team from the
National First Division into the Premier League and established them as a
top-flight contender. His achievements include winning the inaugural
Carling Knockout and leading the club to the CAF Confederation Cup
semi-finals—where they were ultimately eliminated by Simba.
If the move materializes, Sergel would follow Barker to Tanzania as Simba
continue restructuring their technical team ahead of the new season.
Barker himself is only the second South African coach to take charge of
Simba in recent years, following Fadlu Davids, who later left to join Raja
Casablanca.
