Former Orlando Pirates winger Daine Klate has applauded the Buccaneers’
cup success this season but insists the squad must now channel all focus
towards winning the Premier Soccer League title.
Despite the soaring expectations among fans for a potential treble or
quadruple—following victories in the MTN8 and Carling Knockout—Klate
believes the league remains the ultimate prize and a true measure of
dominance.
“Winning cups is one thing, but the ultimate, the bread and butter, is
obviously the league title,” Klate told PSLSA. “I’m very happy with how
Pirates have stayed close to Sundowns in the last couple of seasons. The
most important thing was just to stay close. What I’m seeing now is real
competition for the league.”
Klate suggested that the club’s early exit from the CAF Champions League
might prove beneficial in their domestic campaign. “It is obviously not the
best thing for them, but maybe that’s a blessing in disguise to push for the
league title—and they are really capable of doing it. Sundowns do need
competition at this point in time. That only augurs well for our football,
whoever wins.”
The former star, who won multiple trebles with Pirates, dismissed concerns
that early cup success could dampen hunger for the league. Instead, he
argued it builds crucial momentum.
“When you win trophies before the league title, it only augurs well for
confidence and belief—from the fans and the club as a whole,” Klate
explained. “It brings back the belief that they can win the league. Let’s
leave the MTN8 and Carling behind; those cups are already won. That success
builds your confidence for the league title, and I think they are more than
capable this season.”
Klate concluded with a note of optimism, pointing to Pirates’ strong
position in the standings. “They find themselves in a very good position. I
think this could be the season that Pirates finally pip Sundowns for the
league title.”
