Orlando Pirates have entered the pursuit of Zimbabwean striker
Washington Navaya, whose impressive form has attracted interest from
multiple clubs in South Africa and abroad.
PSLSA can reveal that the Buccaneers, currently leading the Betway
Premiership, are among the sides tracking the recently crowned Zimbabwe
Soccer Star of the Year. Interest also comes from Durban City and Zimbabwean
champions Scotland FC.
The player’s agent, Gilbert Sengwe, confirmed the widespread interest but
highlighted a current logistical hurdle: Navaya is fully focused on national
team duty as Zimbabwe prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“There is some interest from several clubs… Now they selected the final team
which is going to AFCON. So as it is now, even if we agree on everything,
the player needs to sign the contract. But they are not allowed to leave the
camp. The moment he gets out, the coach will just say, ‘Don’t come back,’”
Sengwe explained.
When pressed on the other interested parties, Sengwe was cautious but
confirmed talks with Durban City and enquiries from one of South Africa’s
“Big Three” clubs—now understood to be Orlando Pirates.
“There are several clubs that have enquired… even a big South African team.
I’ve also been chatting with Durban City. The issue now is we are saying
maybe as soon as he comes back from AFCON, then we can finalise everything.
Yes, we can agree on terms, but he needs to sign. Signing is what makes
everything final,” Sengwe stated.
Navaya is currently with the Zimbabwe Warriors, who are in Group D alongside
South Africa, Angola, and Egypt. Any potential transfer is expected to be
advanced only after his AFCON campaign concludes.
