Zimbabwe’s Hardrock Eye Mngonyama Amid Squad Overhaul, But Face Uphill Battle

Newly-promoted Zimbabwean side Hardrock are targeting experienced
defender Kwanda Mngonyama as they look to bolster their squad for their
upcoming top-flight debut.

The club has made enquiries about the 32-year-old centre-back, formerly of
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, aiming to add his proven quality and
experience to their ranks.

However, Hardrock’s pursuit is expected to fall short. Mngonyama recently
secured a move to Al Ittihad Sports Club in Bahrain’s second division,
following standout performances for South Africa at the African Nations
Championship (CHAN) in August.

After his contract with AmaZulu FC expired, Mngonyama briefly trained with
Siwelele FC before his CHAN call-up. His displays in Uganda attracted
international interest, culminating in his move to the Middle East.

A source indicates that Hardrock’s interest is part of an ambitious
recruitment drive backed by a significant budget. “They are keen on
reinforcing with quality players. Mngonyama fits their plans, but it won’t
be easy as he has just moved abroad,” the source stated.

Hardrock, who won the Zifa Northern Region Division to earn promotion, are
establishing their leadership and are determined to build a competitive
squad with experienced signings, despite the challenges in securing some
targets.
