Orlando Pirates playmaker Patrick Maswanganyi has opened up about
adjusting to a more rotational role this season, despite his status as a
former PSL Players’ Player of the Year.
The 27-year-old has seen increased competition for his midfield position
with the impressive integration of newcomers Sipho Mbule and Masindi
Nemthajela. This shift has required patience and flexibility, with
Maswanganyi contributing both as a starter and as an impact substitute.
Despite the challenge, his output remains strong. In 14 appearances across
all competitions this season, Maswanganyi has started 11 matches, scoring
four goals and providing two assists as Pirates continue to compete on
multiple fronts.
Speaking to SNAWA on Metro FM, Maswanganyi acknowledged the personal
difficulty of the situation while emphasizing his team-first attitude.
“I think some of the things you can’t control in life. This has been hard
for me to sometimes watch the other players play, but you need to understand
also that those people are working very hard and they’re doing really good
at the moment,” he said.
He added that his approach has been to lead by example, even from the bench.
“For me, it’s never been a case of asking the coach why am I not playing?
But for me, it’s to show the other guys, especially the new guys, that I can
also be on the bench and support them. They can feel motivated to do more
because they’re helping us at the moment and we really appreciate their hard
work.”
His adaptability and professionalism have provided a steadying presence as
Pirates build squad depth in their pursuit of further silverware.
