Orlando Pirates vice-captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi capped his tenure at the
club with silverware, playing his final match in their Carling Knockout Cup
triumph over Marumo Gallants on Saturday. The midfielder is set to embark on
a new challenge, joining Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire after the
upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking after the emotional victory, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou
expressed deep understanding for Mbokazi’s impending move, drawing from his
own parallel experience as a young player at France’s Nancy FC.
“I was in his position when I was 22 at Nancy,” Ouaddou shared. “I was
developed there, but after two years in the first division, I had my chance
to move to the Premier League with Fulham. This is the natural evolution of
a footballer. I just wish him the very best.”
The coach revealed he had given Mbokazi a clear mission ahead of the final:
“I told him before the game, ‘You need to help put the team first and win
this trophy. Then, nobody can speak because you have done your job.’ And the
guy, he did his job.”
Ouaddou also offered parting advice, emphasizing that the move should not
diminish the player’s connection to his roots or his ambition. “He is going
to the U.S. We wish for him to keep improving and evolving. He must never
forget Orlando Pirates and never forget the national team. Going to the U.S.
doesn’t mean you stop making an effort. Think of Pirates, think of your
nation—that is very important.”
Mbokazi is scheduled to join Chicago Fire following his participation with
Bafana Bafana at the AFCON tournament in January.
