Former Marumo Gallants coach Dylan Kerr has sent a special message of
support to club Chairman Abram Sello ahead of the Carling Knockout final
against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
Gallants are enjoying a remarkable season under head coach Alexandre
Lafitte, reaching their third domestic cup final in five years after a
penalty shootout victory over Golden Arrows in the semi-finals.
The club, which won the 2020/21 Nedbank Cup as Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila
and finished as runners-up the following season, is now on the cusp of more
silverware. Kerr, who guided the side to a historic CAF Confederation Cup
semi-final in 2023/24, believes Chairman Sello is the driving force behind
this sustained success.
“I’m pleased for the Chairman; he deserves every credit for the money he has
outlaid for that club,” Kerr told the Siya crew. “He deserves every success
that he can get with Marumo. They were in the Nedbank Cup final two years on
the trot.”
However, Kerr’s message also contained a note of caution, referencing a past
bonus dispute. After the club’s Confederation Cup run, former players took
Gallants to the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber over unpaid shares of the
competition prize money.
“My message to the Chairman is: make sure you give them a bonus, haha,” Kerr
added with a laugh, alluding to the previous saga. “After what happened with
me the last time with the bonus issue…”
The winners of Saturday’s final at Moses Mabhida Stadium will receive R6.85
million in prize money.
