Sundowns’ Teen Prodigy Siyabonga Mabena Knocking on First-Team Door

Promising young attacker Siyabonga Mabena is reportedly on the cusp of a
first-team return at Mamelodi Sundowns, with his consistent excellence in
the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) capturing the attention of head coach Miguel
Cardoso.

The 18-year-old showcased his quality over the weekend, scoring the opening
goal in Sundowns’ resounding 4-0 DDC victory over Polokwane City. According
to insights, his sustained high-level performances have put him in a strong
position to be reintegrated into the senior squad early in the new year.

Mabena was initially part of Cardoso’s plans at the start of the season,
earning a spot in the matchday squad on several occasions. He made six
appearances across all competitions—primarily as a substitute—before his
campaign was interrupted by duty with the South African national team at the
FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Since returning from the international tournament, the pathway to the first
team has been more congested due to new signings arrived during the transfer
window. This led the technical team to strategically allow Mabena to regain
his rhythm and confidence with regular minutes in the DDC.

This plan appears to be paying dividends. The valuable game time has
reportedly seen Mabena’s confidence soar, and he is now poised and ready for
his next opportunity with the senior side.

With a congested fixture list still ahead for Sundowns this season, it is
expected that Mabena will soon get his chance to once again feature for
Miguel Cardoso’s side and build on his early promise.
