Mamelodi Sundowns’ new midfielder Nuno Santos has expressed his deep
honour at inheriting the club’s iconic number 10 jersey, following a dream
debut where he scored twice in the 3-1 CAF Champions League victory over
Saint Eloi Lupopo.
The 26-year-old Portuguese playmaker, who filled the void left by Lucas
Ribeiro Costa, delivered a man-of-the-match performance that immediately
endeared him to the Sundowns faithful. Reflecting on the match, Santos
highlighted the team’s success while acknowledging his personal
satisfaction.
“It was a great performance by the team. The three points are the most
important thing, but I’m very happy for the individual performance as well,”
Santos told journalists after the group stage opener at Loftus Stadium.
His transition to South African football has been remarkably smooth,
something he attributes to the club’s welcoming culture. “My adaptation is
going better than I thought. They welcomed me very well, and I’m thankful
for all the people who are making me feel at home since I came,” he added.
Santos revealed that Sundowns’ status as a continental giant and their
determined pursuit were key factors in his decision to join. “It’s the
biggest club in South Africa and one of the biggest in Africa. I felt the
club really wanted me, and when you feel that, it’s way easier to make those
decisions.”
While acknowledging the unique challenges of African football, Santos
expressed confidence in his ongoing adjustment. “It’s very different. I’m
trying to adapt as fast as I can, and I think I’m doing pretty well,” he
stated, noting that his previous appearances in the qualifying rounds
against Remo Stars had been valuable preparation.
The presence of Portuguese head coach Miguel Cardoso has been a significant
advantage in his settlement. “It has influence, of course. To have a
Portuguese coach who speaks the same language and can advise me how things
are here made it way easier,” Santos explained.
Wearing the famous number 10 shirt is a responsibility the midfielder
cherishes. “I’m very honoured to wear this number. It’s a number I’ve always
loved, and I know about its history at the club. I’m very happy for the
opportunity,” he said, visibly proud.
Looking forward, Santos has set his sights on the highest achievements but
remains focused on a step-by-step approach. “I want to win everything. I am
a person who thinks about the next game. The goal is there, but game by game
we are going to get there,” he concluded.
