Sundowns Face Goalkeeping Dilemma Ahead of Champions League Opener

Mamelodi Sundowns are assessing a potential injury to veteran goalkeeper
Denis Onyango just days before their CAF Champions League group stage
campaign begins.

The Tshwane giants are set to host DR Congo’s St Eloi Lupopo in their Group
C opener on Saturday. The concern stems from Onyango’s recent international
duty with Uganda, where he was forced off in the 65th minute of a friendly
against Morocco on Tuesday evening.

The 40-year-old, who came out of international retirement this year, has
served as a reliable deputy for Sundowns this season. His potential absence
would be a setback, as he has consistently delivered when called upon,
including a start in the Champions League preliminary round against Remo
Stars.

However, there is a positive update for the squad. Goalkeeper Jody February
has recently returned to training after an injury that saw him miss the FIFA
Club World Cup. Should Onyango be ruled out, coach Miguel Cardoso will have
February and Reyaad Pieterse as backup options for first-choice keeper
Ronwen Williams.

February, whose contract runs until June 2026, will be eager to secure a
spot in the matchday squad and push for more playing time.

Onyango is expected to return to the club’s Chloorkop base by Thursday, at
which point a final decision on his fitness for the weekend will be made.
